1939年12月31日，在维也纳金色大厅举办了首届“新年音乐会”,由克来门斯·克劳斯创办;第2届于1941年1月1日举行,以后除1945年因战争原因停办一届外,其余都是于每年的1月1日定期在金色大厅举行;1946年,新年音乐会正式命名为“维也纳新年音乐会”。

1939年12月31日在维也纳金色大厅举办了首届“新年音乐会”,由克来门斯·克劳斯(Clemens Krauss主持)创办;这是第一次也是唯一一次音乐会不是在元旦举行,而是在当年的12月31日举行;后来被称为特殊或“非凡”音乐会(AußerordentlichesKonzert);约翰·施特劳斯二世(Johann Strauss II)是一位谦虚的演奏者,也是唯一的作曲演奏者.
